Before going into the cons of using protein powder, it is important to know exactly what whey protein even is. Whey protein is actually a protein that comes from cow’s milk and other dairy products and it is the liquid byproduct of the cheesemaking process. This liquid byproduct is then made into a fine powder form and lactose and fat are both removed from it to enhance how much protein it can contain, which is about 90 to 95% protein at the end of the process.

There are a few reasons why you should consider switching from whey protein to a different kind of protein powder because whey protein can actually do more harm than good with some side effects that can really affect you.

Some of the harmful side effects of whey protein powder include:

  • Can negatively affect kidney function
  • Can notice signs of early liver injuries because of the process of the protein in your liver
  • Can prevent good bacteria from growing in your gut
  • Skin can breakout with severe acne
